Important Update: A New Chapter in My Career and Future Patient Care

After many years at Sozialstiftung Bamberg and a fulfilling time as Head of Neurosurgery, I am excited to announce the next chapter in my career: Starting April 1, 2025, I will be practicing in my Wahlarztordination (private practice) in Vienna. There, I will continue my clinical and scientific work in the field of neurosurgery to provide my patients with the best possible care.

 

Additionally, I am pleased to announce that, beginning in April, I will take on the role of Chief Physician of the Department of Minimally Invasive Neurosurgery at Oberwart Hospital. This position will allow me to bring my many years of expertise directly into the hospital sector in Austria.

Bamberg Hospital of Sozialstiftung Bamberg has been certified as a maximum care spine center by CERT iQ GmbH. This makes us the 3rd interdisciplinary spine center (NCH/UCH) in Bavaria and the first non-university center in the region.
We are the 33rd certified center of this kind in Germany, and we are delighted with this recognition. The certification confirms the high quality of our work and the interdisciplinary cooperation between neurosurgery and trauma surgery.

 

A heartfelt thank you from Prof. Dr. Dr. Günther Feigl goes to our dedicated team and to his colleague Prof. Dr. Peter Strohm, Head of Trauma Surgery and Orthopaedics, for their joint leadership of the center.

Neurosurgery Workshop: A Great Success, Returning to Houston Next Year

The international course on modern approaches to the brain and skull base, organized by Prof. Feigl, Prof. Rotim from KBCSM (Klinički bolnički centar Sestre milosrdnice) in Zagreb and Prof. Britz from Houston Methodist Hospital, was a great success. The event, which brought together experts from around the world, provided valuable insights into the latest neurosurgical techniques. Neurosurgery Research Faculty

As a member of the neurosurgery research team at Houston Methodist Hospital, I am proud to be part of this institution. In 2023, we completed ten thousand elective surgeries and secured 22.5 million dollars in research funding, including nearly 10 million from federal sources. I am pleased with the work of our team and confident that we will continue to make significant contributions to neurosurgery.

Successful Track Record After 5 Years.

 

The Skull Base Center Bamberg, founded in 2018 by Prof. Prof. h.c. Dr. Dr. med. Günther Feigl, has been successfully recertified by the German Society for Skull Base Surgery. With this certification, the professional society recognizes the years of successful and close collaboration among the Department of Neurosurgery (Headed by Prof. Prof. h.c. Dr. Dr. med. Günther Feigl), the Department of Ear, Nose, and Throat Medicine (Headed by Dr. Andreas Eckert), the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Outpatient Center (Dr. med. Dr. med. dent. Alexander von Moller), as well as connections to Neuroradiology, Radiation Oncology, Oncology, Neuropathology, Plastic Surgery, and Ophthalmology.

 

The Skull Base Center primarily treats patients with both benign and malignant tumors at the skull base, as well as those with injuries, developmental disorders, malformations, or inflammations in this area. Affected individuals can seek consultation during the weekly Skull Base Clinic.

 

Diseases and injuries of the skull base pose a unique surgical challenge due to the special and very confined anatomical conditions and the vessels, cranial nerves, as well as adjacent structures such as the eye, the oral and nasal cavities, and the brain that traverse it. Preoperatively, patient cases are discussed interdisciplinary to establish a common treatment concept, followed by a (collaborative) surgery and interdisciplinary postoperative care.

 

The interdisciplinary facility, in addition to modern comprehensive diagnostics, offers guideline-compliant, individual, and patient-oriented therapy, as well as optimal surgical care.

 

Tumor resections are performed minimally invasive and microsurgically using state-of-the-art technical equipment such as endoscopes, microscopes, neuromonitoring, navigation, and fluorescence-guided resection procedures.
